CMS Docs go Live

Just a quick update on what’s been happening:

• Our help docs went live last week at porncms.com/docs
• Amazon S3 module is in beta testing. This module will automatically copy your content to Amazon S3 for faster end-user delivery. Excellent for large sites (we’re beta testing with Matt’s Models and getting huge cost savings). We’ll be adding this module to the CMS free of charge as soon as we’re done testing.
• Added color picker in Stylesheet configuration page to allow easy editing of stylesheet colors.

Photo Editor Live

We added a really easy to use Photoshop-style Photo Set editor to Porn CMS over the weekend. This editor allows you do several things to your posted photos, such as rotate, stylize, add text, and filter a couple dozen different ways. Here is a quick step-by-step guide to using the new Photo Editor.

Tragedy Narrowly Averted

One of the biggest worries running a website is the constant threat of attacks. Thousands of hackers, hobbyists, and bored schoolkids continuously bombard web servers in the hopes of “cracking” a box. Sometimes their purpose is malicious harm, but mostly they are just trying to prove something to themselves.

Porn websites receive a majority of all web attacks due to the high value of their content. Some of the servers we manage see half a million hacker hits a month.

This week one of these little bastards succeeded in compromising one of the 40 servers under our control. They came in through a hacked FTP login and took over the server. For the most part we prohibit FTP access on our servers because of their poor security, but occassionally a client insists on having FTP.

We discovered the hacker’s entry within a few minutes when we got an alert that the server password had been changed. However we could no longer access the server. Our only solution was to wipe the server and reload everything.

Now here’s the good part. Porn CMS data is XML / flat-file based and backed up several times a day. Since there’s no database, that means the data is highly portable, easy to back up, and even easier to restore.

The only thing we don’t automatically back up is the content. We charge $95 a month for full daily remote server backups. In situations like this, you can see its well worth the cost.

Luckily in this situation, the websites on the hacked server were fully backed up on a remote server. We were able to rebuild and restore the websites to full speed within a couple hours.

If you are a Porn CMS client, and you aren’t taking advantage of our remote server backup service, we’d highly recommend that you add the service today. Peace of mind is priceless!

Security Upgrade

We did a massive security upgrade over the past few weeks that gives our site owners more control over visiting traffic. We don’t store member info in the CMS, since that information should be stored in your billing or affiliate system, but we do manage and track usernames and IPs. The following two modules will help you gain control over your users and traffic.

SECURITY MODULE

In your Porn CMS admin you’ll notice a new SECURITY module. Click it and you’ll see a page with four boxes: settings, banned IPs, banned users, and traffic log.

 

The settings allow you to throttle your traffic and effectively put a stop to any rogue hacker attacks by limiting the amount of clicks and bandwidth allowed by visitors. All settings are defaulted OFF. To enable a setting, simply adjust the value, then check back to see if anyone was banned.

Porn CMS checks the traffic log every minute to hunt for violations, then bans the user’s IP or username immediately. You can override the system for any username or IP easily in this module.

At the bottom of the module is a traffic monitor. This shows the day’s traffic (more detailed traffic is available in your DASHBOARD). Click on an IP or username in the traffic monitor to filter the results. IP history is saved for one day and username history is stored as far back as the username is in use.

PASSFILE MODULE

We added a second security module to the system for managing usernames. The PASSFILE module shows all usernames in each password file on your site and allows you to add, re-add, delete, or view a username’s history. You can also manually add guest passes in the PASSFILE module by choosing the Manual Passes file.

We’re in the Cloud!

Cloud computing is the buzzword of the day, but what it means is that a website is copied to many servers at once. This redundancy eliminates possible downtime and limitlessly increases the number of users a site can serve at one time.

Mosso Mirror

We’ve moved the CMS engine (the critical system files) to Mosso. If you’d like your entire site to load from the Mosso Cloud, we’ve added a new product called the Mosso Mirror.

Our Mosso Mirror service configures your Porn CMS account to automatically copy (mirror) your front-end to a Mosso hosting account. That means, your actual site will be served by Mosso’s high-speed cloud and not from a single server.

New Browser by Google

Google just released the beta version of their new browser, Google Chrome, and like everything from Google, its a category killer. I’ve been using it for a couple days and its so far beyond Internet Explorer and Firefox thats its almost a different software classification.

One of the most impressive features of Google Chrome is its multithreaded architecture. Every new tab creates a new process on your machine, and a new memory space, rather than lumping all tabs into the same browser.

Why is this good? Because traditional browsers all have memory leak. As tabs are opened and closed they leave parts of memory locked up, which over time adds up to a huge loss of memory (ever had a browser lock up after hours of use?). These pieces of memory can only be recovered by completely closing the entire browser. When a tab in Chrome is closed, its like closing the browser, so the memory is 100% cleared.

The multithreading also means different tabs can be working on different web processes independently. This feature caught my eye because its a very good thing for Porn CMS.

When you’re managing a website with an online CMS, its often more efficient to have several tabs open to different admin pages so you can do many tasks at once. For instance, when I’m adding content to a site, I may have the Upload page, Video or Photo page, Schedule, and Thumbnails page all open at once. This way I can be uploading new content, checking the schedule, and creating thumbnails all at the same time.

In an old school browser these tabs would all be in the same memory space and use the same process on my PC. This bogs down the browser, and occassionally makes it crash closing all my tabs. Chrome allows me to do a lot more in less time.
